As with humans feet and dogs feet, it is also very important to make sure your cat’s feet are looked after properly. People tend to think that as cats are very clean animals and clean themselves regularly, that it is not needed to monitor the condition of their feet but this is untrue.

A cat’s feet should be kept clean. Now your cat will probably save you the effort of washing them and do that itself, however it is a good idea to check them every now and then anyway. If you bath your cat, make sure that you gently was their feet and particularly around the paw area when you do so. If you do not bath your cat then just make sure your pets feet are kept clean and if necessary, just clean gently with a damp cloth around their paw area.

Cats need to sharpen their claws regularly and most will know to do so. Most cats will sharpen their claws by climbing trees or clawing at something outside. You may like offer your cat some kind of post to sharpen their claws on. Something like a carpet covered post or box works well.

If your cat is cleaning itself regularly and looking after its claws, then you should not have a need to trim the claws back. If you do decide to trim your cat’s claws, only trim a little bit at a time and do not cut too much off. Cats need their claws to be able to climb and grip things. Always trim claws with a special animal claw cutter. These should be able to be purchased from any pet store.

If you have a longhaired cat then you may need to trim back the hair that grows between the paw area regularly. This hair can be annoying to your cat and may cause some discomfort to them. Your cat may even try to pull this hair out itself or may clean it obsessively. To trim this hair, use a small pair of scissors and gently trim the hair one paw at a time. With shorthaired cats, then should not be an issue.

Check your cat’s feet regularly for any irregularities. If you find any unusual odors, or any kind or excretions then it is best that you take you cat to your local vet. Irregularities such as these may mean there is an infection or problem in the area.

Cats can also get splinters and cuts in their paws, so once again it is vital to check the area regularly. If you notice your cat obsessively cleaning one of its paws, this is usually a sign that something is wrong. Cats are very clean animals, so a cat will try to clean the area if it is in pain or has some problem. If your cat does have an infections or problem in its paw area, it is best to take it to your vet, but also try to make sure that the cat does not lick at the area too much as this may make infection worse.

Most cats should not suffer from too many feet problems however it may depend on the type of breed. Check out what kind of aliments your breed of cat is prone to, and remember to just check your cat’s feet regularly.
