So you've just brought home your new pet, but you have no idea what to name it. Bookstores aren't exactly chock full of books of names for your new pet. But don't give up immediately on bookstores or libraries. You might actually want to check out some books of names for children. There is no reason why you can't pick a great kid's name for your new pet. After all, your new pet will be one of your children, right?

There are, of course, other great resources to find names for your new pet. You might want to pull a few ideas from the following list to see if you can find the perfect name for your new pet.

- Try some of your favorite books. Why not choose a character from one of these books? What is your favorite novel of all time, for instance?

- Pick your favorite place in the whole world and choose a name associated with that place. Sometimes even the name of a country will work. Or maybe you like a particular city name. You can also choose a name in a different language that is related to your favorite place.

- If some of your friends have a good sense of humor, choose one of their names and give it to your pet. Or, you can adapt it ever so slightly.

- Have you considered using the name of your childhood pet that died years ago? That is a nice way to commemorate your dearly beloved pet that passed away.

- If you have children, let your children use their wonderful imaginations. Chances are that they will have plenty of ideas if you go to them as a resource. It's also a nice gift to your children to give them this fun task.

- Are you a music lover? Perhaps you have a favorite singer whose name you have always admired.

- Television is all full of resources, although people who do not think highly of television might not choose to go this route. If you do decide to think of television, maybe you could choose a favorite television character. Or a cartoon character.

- What about comic strips. Snoopy might not be altogether original, but it sure is a great name.

One thing to think about is that you will need to train your pet with this name. You want a name that will work well when you are straining your voice time and time again to call your pet!

Names that end in "ie" and "y" are always fun and easy pet names. Ideas include Bonny, Bonnie, Friendly, Susie, Katie, Danny, etc.

Yes, some of these names are typical names used for humans. But if you truly love your new pet, what difference does it make?

You want, of course, not to offend anyone. If your grandmother is particularly stuffy, perhaps you do not want to name your new pet after her third husband!

So you've brought home your new puppy, you've already gone to the petstore to buy a bunch of toys, and it's time to name your new animal friend. Be original, have fun, and enjoy the new addition to your family!
